The sprawling market of São Joachim serves the poor people of the Cidade Baixa, the low city of Salvador, where most of the people are poor and Black, but where African customs remain intact.  The market has rare herbs used for incantations, as well as an astounding variety of exotic fruits, vegetables, meat and fish.
