The obstetrician Professor Norman Morris was responsible for re-evaluating and
radically changing the care of women in pregnancy and in labour. He was the
first clinical professor at Charing Cross Hospital when he was appointed in
1958. This appointment was made on the strength of his academic research
into blood pressure in pregnancy and the function of the placenta. At
Charing Cross he continued this work, making significant contributions to
the understanding of transport across the placenta. His department spawned
many academic obstetricians who went on to their own chairs in the UK and
the US.
