Monsignor David Gemmell was the genial vicar general of the Archdiocese of St
Andrews and Edinburgh, administrator (1996-2008) of St Mary’s Metropolitan
Cathedral, teacher, mountain climber, fisherman, lover of people and music
and sport. On Saturday March 1, 2008, less than a week before his death,
Gemmell brought his parish to fresh heights with the inaugural concert by
the new cathedral organist, Simon Nieminski, playing the fine new organ to a
huge audience. This event was the symbolic culmination of Gemmell’s ministry
— an occasion that was both inclusive and wilfully gregarious.
