Gilbert Reaney was one of the most prolific and influential musicologists of
the past century. A marked clarity of thought and elegance of style imbued
his writings, which covered all aspects of medieval music, and also
characterised his teaching. His many books, catalogues, articles and
editions make a formidable legacy, and are consistently cited by later
generations of musicologists, particularly those studying the life and works
of the 14th-century composer Guillaume de Machaut or working in the field of
medieval music theory.
